Overview of Kitchen Cabinet Materials 

1. Melamine

Melamine is created by laminating a thin layer of plastic onto a particleboard or a medium-density fibreboard (MDF). As the cheapest type of material available for cabinetry, typically reserved for budget renovations. 

Melamine cabinets have a lower upfront cost, but it is not the most cost-effective option, as it’s not durable. While melamine is easy to wipe down, it can warp and swell when moisture gets into the core substrate. Once water damage sets in, it cannot be repaired and must be replaced.  The need for more frequent replacements leads to additional costs down the line. 

This also makes melamine highly impractical for cabinets positioned adjacent to or directly above a stove or sink.

2. High Pressure Laminate (HPL)

3. Solid Timber

4. Acrylic / High Gloss

Acrylic cabinets are the modern standard for most homes built since the 2010s, and for good reasons – the glossy appearance creates a clean visual appearance in the kitchen, is easy to wipe down, and is highly resistant to moisture. 

Acrylic laminate is in the same price tier as HPL – an affordable choice of material that achieves a premium look in the kitchen. 

The only main downside to acrylic is that it smudges and scratches easily, but this can be planned around with door handles and consistent cleaning.

5. Aluminium Frame / Glass Doors

Aluminium frame cabinetry, as well as other metal-based materials like stainless steel, are popular contemporary options to achieve a professional look for the kitchen. Aluminium is lightweight and offers full protection against moisture. 

Most homes that incorporate aluminium frame cabinetry combine it with glass doors for an elevated appearance. Placement for aluminium frame cabinetry is usually adjacent to the stove and sink. 

Aluminium cabinetry tends to be more expensive due to material costs, but it is an investment that lasts for a long time, up to 40 years, with minimal maintenance needed.
